Friends.
There’s a new shirt / hoodie in the Heretic Shop called “<3 w/ an !” (or “love with an exclamation point”).
We live in divisive times, if you haven’t noticed. I was talking to a friend the other day and we were lamenting about how tired we are of being told who to hate or who to shame or who to cancel today. The Left tells the people on the left who to cancel while the Right tells the people on the right who to cancel.
Have you experienced this?
“Barak Obama!”
“Charlie Kirk!”
“Columbus!”
“Rob Bell!”
“Focus on the Family!”
Sigh.
I’m tired of being angry.
I’m tired of being outraged by Absolutely. Everything.
No, that doesn’t mean “anything goes” with no accountability, no disagreements, etc. It doesn’t mean we become wishy washy and turn a blind eye to wrongdoing.
No.
Instead, it means I’m tired of seeing people as walking belief systems or voting choices with legs … you know? Because, honestly, people (myself included) are MORE than the things they believe about God, MORE than who they cast their vote for at the polls. The media wants us to think that these things MAKE a person, that these things tell us ALL we need to know about a person.
And, yes - these things are important.
Yes, these things say alot about a person.
But.
These days I’m following the intuitive voice in my heart and am challenging myself to remember that behind the voting choice and belief system is a person with a story; and if I get to know that story? If I can get curious about the origins of the voting choices and beliefs?
Well.
What if I might just feel a surge of empthy inside so that even if I disagree with the person and their ideas, their values, their beliefs, etc. … I might see them (even for an instant) as God sees them.
And then?
Who knows what could happen.
“Love w/ an exclamation point.” I dare you to make it your motto today.
Much love,
