Friends.
New art today. The Grinch didn’t hate Christmas; he hated people because of the way he was treated for being different.
He was green.
He was hairy.
He smelt funny.
… And he was pushed away as a monster.
His hate was overcome by love, however - the love of a “tiny Who daughter” transformed his hate into love and grew his tiny heart a bunch of sizes.
In today’s world we so often try to defeat the hate we see with more hate, more judgement, more shaming, more outcasting.
But.
Perhaps.
Maybe.
… Cindy Lou Who was on to something.
Right?
Because maybe the generation that will break down hate won’t be the one that shouts the loudest at the perceived evils around us, but the one that makes space to see those who are different from us - seeing them not as evil or dirty or bad, but as human beings who are broken and hurting and traumatized by moments and times and events from their past that they (perhaps) don’t even remember all that well.
As Fr. Greg Boyle says …
I have never met anyone evil, and neither have you. We’ve all, however, met the broken, the despondent and damaged, the desperate and unwell, the traumatized, wounded, and injured. But never anyone evil … if we could see the secret history of each person, it would surely disarm our hearts.
Yes, yes - love wins, always.
